The Tostifactory is a living installation showing the miracle that precedes the food on your plate.

A campaign about the gap between the city and its food.

Over a nine months period we produced all the ingredients for a tosti (a grilled ham and cheese sandwich) from start to finish. In the middle of Amsterdam, we build a Tosti factory consisting of one wheat field, two pigs, two cows, one calf and a cheese production room.

The whole city sympathized with the mooing cows, the slaughter of the pigs Wim & Max, the harvest of the wheat and ultimately celebrated with us the production of 450 tosti’s!

The Tosti factory was created through crowdfunding via Voordekunst, Mediamatic, a large number of sponsors both in knowledge as in materials and a lot of good friends who became farmers for a few months.

The Great Decrease is campaigning for a world with fewer people. A sensitive subject, because who am I to tell you that you should not have a baby?

“God blessed them; and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.'”

These were the first words of god against man. And multiply we did ! Our species has more than doubled in numbers over the last 50 years. In the same 50 years, the worldwide populations of wild vertebrates – mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish – have more than halved. Scientists warn that the explosive growth of the world’s population is a driving force behind today’s major problems including climate change, biodiversity loss and resource scarcity.

In a triptych about population growth in the Rode Hoed, De Nieuwe Liefde and the Compagnietheater, we spoke extensively about the subject of population growth. Speakers were Donna Haraway, Lynn Berger, Tinkebell, Frank Westerman, Tim Sweijs, Naomi van Steenbergen, Hidde Boersma, Arne Hendriks and Tom Würdinger.

The Great Decrease concluded with an international billboard campaign. With a manifesto and the “Let’s celebrate low birth rates!” And “Shrink towards abundance” slogans, the Great Shrink encourages countries with a low birth rate to celebrate their achievement and be proud of it.

We started a sustainable canning factory that produces tasty canned food making use of residual flows and surpluses.

With our cans we campaign against food waste and for a revaluation of canned food. Our goal: a more efficient food system that wastes less.

In search of good food that suits the food system of the future, we can not ignore the can.

Conserved food is often much more sustainable than fresh food. By conserving food in cans we can keep food flows sustainable and avoid waste. In addition, we can transport and store canned food without refrigeration. That saves a lot of energy. And last but not least, tin cans are easy and infinitely recyclable.

In our opinion, the can is the ideal building block for a sustainable food system. With Coco Conserven, we campaigned for a sustainable, tasty and efficient food system that does not waste.

A campaign about the value of food, sustainability, food waste, craft and industry and the relationship between consumer and producer.

The Doityourselfchicken is a crate that contains everything you need to produce your own chicken meat at home. From egg to chicken fillet in a  9 week period.

In a controversial and high-profile campaign, we followed 8 consumers who got busy in their homes with the Doityourselfchicken. A campaign commissioned by the Province of Brabant that gives a new impulse to the public debate about eating meat, slaughter, the value of meat and the importance of transparency of food chains.

While food chains are becoming increasingly transparent, there is one component that is always kept out of sight: slaughter. With the Doityourselfchicken we make the slaughter part of our consumption again and we investigate what this means for our meat consumption. Consumers themselves are responsible for the entire production process of their chicken meat. They are guided in this by farmers.

Farmers and consumers use their experiences with the Doityourselfchicken to develop new ways of dealing with meat. The province of Noord-Brabant is also using the Doityourselfchicken for education.

For the ‘Social Design Police’ project, we designed the ADO (Alternative Effective Solution). The ADO is a new competence of the local police officer. Sometimes the police are unable to solve a problem with the usual methods.

In this case it is a nuisance in porches in the Provenierswijk in Rotterdam. The porches are closed off from view because they are high and dark or because the stairs go around the corner. This makes them a favorite place for youngsters and drug users. Dirt left behind, odor nuisance and a feeling of insecurity are recurring complaints.

The only thing the police can do is patrol and issue a fine if they catch someone. The fine unfortunately makes little impression and it takes a lot of time. Because it is not possible to control a portico from the street and the police have to go up and down the stairs every time. In short: it is mopping with the tap open and the nuisance is no less.

In such cases, there is sometimes another solution available that is shared by those involved (neighborhood police officer, local residents, housing, entrepreneurs, municipality) and that also saves time and police power in the long term. The ADO is for such cases. The ADO stands for Alternative Effective Solution. It is a method and extra time for the local police officer to deal with problems that are not solved by standard enforcement in an alternative way. The local police officer often knows the problem well, knows those involved, maintains close ties with the other departments of the municipality and social organizations, and has a decisive authority in the further process.

Sureyya Accar, district agent in the Provenierswijk in Rotterdam, is the first district agent in the Netherlands that uses an ADO. Together with Sureyya we explored the neighborhood and investigated whether there was a solution that would allow Sureyya to perform its work more effectively. “Actually, just a fence or a door should be put in those porches so that you can no longer hang out or use it out of sight” suggested both the local police officer, local residents and the nuisances.

By using the ADO, the porches are closed under the supervision of Sureyya Accar at the expense of the owner.

Commissioned by Foodup! Brabant and precision farmer Jacob van den Borne we came up with Frietje Precies (loosely translated ‘Precision Fries’).
Frietje Precies is a portion of high-tech and soil-friendly french fries. The future of agriculture translated into fries.

A biological portion of fries made from potato, sweet potato and parsnip. Very precisely cultivated by using sensor technology, robotics and lots of data. Because the more we know about the soil and its crops, the more precisely we can administer water, fertilizers and crop protectors and reduce unnecessary waste. In this way the farmer can provide the soil and each individual plant with precisely what it needs. At precisely the right place and at precisely the right time. Frietje Precies is cultivated in a special field where different crops and flowers are alternated in strips. By growing different crops and flowers side by side in strips, we ensure a higher yield, healthier plants that fall ill less often and we get a more diverse landscape and that is…. PRECISELY!: Good for insects, crops and birds!
